Ethical Dilemma #1: Nicotine in Beverages

Smoking and nicotine are bad for your health -- that's a fact. So why would an American company create a lemon-flavoured drink laced with nicotine? This 8 oz soda contains the same amount of nicotine as two cigarettes. The company is marketing this drink to smokers who find themselves in places where smoking is prohibited. But nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Those who oppose this product claim that it is the equivalent to putting a drug in a soda can. Meanwhile, supporters say that the lack of second-hand smoke from these drinks will make nicotine use safer for others. Moreover, because the drink is legally classified as a dietary substance rather than as a drug or cigarette, it is not currently subject to the rules that regulate the sale of drugs and cigarettes. The introduction of this product appears to be serving consumer want.

So... what do you think?

What are the ethical questions that this product raises? Should it be legal to sell this drink in a corner store? Why, or Why not? Explain your position using information you have learned from the course so far as well as your own person opinions.

    1. The ethical questions raised after reading the article are multiple. First, should the drink be sold in any store or just in certain ones? Is the government capable of making sure that nothing else is going into the beverage? Was the beverage proven to be safe on the stomach and rest of the gastrointestinal system and finally should everyone be allowed to buy it?

I think if the rules were followed the drink should be sold in corner stores because it's just like any other smoking replacement that helps people who are trying to minimize the number of cigarettes they smoke or the those who are trying to quit completely. The drink is less harmful than cigarettes, so if a smoker bought the beverage instead it's better for the person and for the people around. generally, I think the nicotine-containing beverage should be sold to people who are18 years or older and if someone is less than 18 years of age, the person should have a medical prescription to purchase it.

I think the drink is good for the consumer because it can be used anywhere and it's less harmful to the person and others in the vicinity. It's also good for the businesses; they can earn profit from the consumers wants.
When the drink is sold in corner stores it means that it's good for both consumers and businesses because it will be more accessible, so consumers can purchase it easily and companies will earn more profit.

    2. I agree that it is less harmful to the person and others in the vicinity than the cigarettes. However, it's not good for the teenagers under 18. If there is not a specific law for only selling nicotine drink to adults, it may even bring bigger harm than the cigaretes.

    3. Yes, it would be a problem if it was sold to minors but, as I mentioned earlier in my discussion, it shouldn't be a problem if the government imposes restrictions on sales and teenage abuse of this beverage would be like any other substance abuse that's being sold with regulations.

  2. Why would an American Company create a lemon-flavoured drink lance with nicotine? Is it illegal to have this? Is it worth it to buy it? Is this product proving that you can now put drugs on drinks others than pills?

It should be, because is helping people to relief their frustration of smoking, more people can buy it and more people would be aware of the drink.

I have learn that there's a lot of products where it can help you on quitting smoking in amount of time. I learn the course is helping you think of bigger questions about a theme and helps you focus in the school.

    1. I agree with your opinion, this product do make people relief from the frustrations of smoking. But this product more is to become a substitution of cigarettes, so it can fix a lot of issues of normal cigarettes such as causing a fire hazard and the issue of second hand smoke.

I agree that there are many ways to quit smoking. Whether it’s worth or not depends on how much it is going to help the smokers. The drink is probably not a perfect substitution of smoking because the smokers are addicted to the way they smoke

  4. Can the government regulate this to control what goes into these drinks, how much goes into them, and who buys it?

I think that with the right rules in place this would be able to be sold in regular stores. It's just another aid to help smokers with their addictions with different kinds of aids being E-cigs and Nicotine Spray where there is a set age for purchase. Although this has the potential of being abused by underage teens it also has the potential to help smokers in non smoking areas and gives the government an opportunity to make a profit through taxes. It is more convenient for the consumer because you can use it anywhere and it is not as noticeable.

    1. I agree with you, this drink could be abused by underage teens. Some teens these days take drugs just because they think it's "cool". Teens might use this drink to be "cool" since it has nicotine in it.

    2. The government in this case has the ability to control the number of drinks coming into the country. The amount of money varies from the amount of people using it when the amount of people needing it reduce so as the price the amount of people increases the price varies. In this nowadays world the people taking advantage from these are teens.Teens nowadays see this to be a "grown up" thing and are willing to try this because they think its the right thing to do in this case.

      Delete
    3. I believe that the government has the ability to limit who can buy these drinks, and should. The fact that these nicotine drinks were able to brand themselves as a beverage to avoid the label of a "drug" allows teens to take advantage of this and potentially buy this product. Due to the high amount of nicotine in the drink, teens could find themselves addicted to it. Because of this reason, I believe that the government can, and should regulate who should be able to purchase this drink.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you that it should be legal and it's just like the other smoking replacements, but I disagree with you about the abuse from teenagers that you said. I think the government can put restrictions, so not everyone can buy it. For example, they can make it for people who are 18 and older and if someone hasn't reached that age the person should be asked for a prescription.

    5. I agree with everything on what you say Gavin, except teenagers potentially abusing nicotine. Even though the nic drink is classified as a dietary supplement, well so is alcohol. Both this nic drink and alcohol have age restrictions that don't give teenagers any "easy access" to drugs. If they do gain access, than the carelessness of the store is to blame.

This is for someone else, I have no idea why you would automatically assume that teenagers would start abusing this nic drink just because it has nicotine in it and somehow makes them cool. Please reply with a logical argument

    6. I agree with you, I think that the government should regulate if the amount of nicotine is the same as they say and that they should regulate if other stuff is added to the drink.

    7. Teenagers abusing things is something that is very common these days. Teens tend to abuse things that are designed to help smokers quit (For example. E-cigs, Nic spray, Nic gum, etc.). These all contain different amounts of nicotine which teens try to get their hands on and eventually consume. I can easily imagine teens finding different ways to get their hands on nicotine. Weather the teens are already abusing nicotine and addicted, influenced by todays society, or influenced by their friends, teens will always find ways to get them through people of age or through shoplifting.

You can't deny that people of all ages these days are finding new ways to abuse different things. These things range from nicotine spray to various substances/meds to alcohol and I don't see nicotine in beverages as any exception.

    1. No.this drink can harm to many people the most harm will be teens. If its legalized in cornered stores teens might take the advantage of that and buy the nicotine with no ID needed. And another point will also be these kind of stores might have used other drugs instead of nicotine which can cause more harm to the people taking the advantage from these corner stores they may have used different ingredients and just put a brand sticker on it and call it this we might never know.In conclusion I will say that it should be illegal for corner store for the safety of the people.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion, it should be legal, because that this is just another kind of smoking product, and cigarettes are legal, so this drink should be legal. And also, it should be having a ID verification to check if people are underage.

      Delete
    3. I don't think this drink should be legal in corner stores for a number of reasons, and here's a few of them; by allowing teens to have the ability and convenience to try a nicotine drink whenever they wasn't, allows for an easy gateway into cigarettes themselves. I also believe that the "safe" and "friendly" branding they use may fool people into thinking that the beverage is safe, when in fact it has the nicotine amount of two cigarettes per bottle.

      Delete
    4. I'm pretty sure that teens gaining access to the nic drink is a problem that both stores and teenagers should deal with, and not the product Nic Lite. The drink is healthier than inhaling the smoke of burnt materials that literally cause cancer, so I disagree with the nic drink being just as unhealthy as cigarettes,

      Delete
    5. I agree that there are many bad things that could come from this drink being sold, but I still think it should be legal because even though there are bad things about this product, it is the same for normal cigarettes and they are still allowed to be sold. If there were the proper restrictions and laws about selling this it would be a better thing than having cigarettes, where second hand smoking is a big problem for people around the smokers.

  6. I believe that this product raises many ethical questions and should not be sold in corner stores. Upon reading the articles, it seems apparent that the nicotine company that introduced the drink was just looking for a loophole to be able to “reclassify” their product as a “dietary substance” so they could not have their sales regulated under the same rules as regular drugs; knowing this and moving forward, should the government step in and take action?

My second question involves the way the beverage appears to be branded and advertized. The company manufacturing the products claims that their beverage is safer than smoking due to smoke not being able to second handedly affect others, and that its a more “friendly” alternative to smoking. The reason this is an ethical dilemma is because the nicotine content in a single bottle is that of two cigarettes, making it a potentially even more dangerous alternative to smoking to the user due to nicotines addicting properties. With this in mind, should we make sure that any “beverage” product containing harmful drugs should be regulated with the same standards that we hold towards regular drugs?

With these two ethical questions in mind, I don't believe that it should be legal to sell these drinks in a corner store. Not only are they falsely branded, and potentially more dangerous than cigarettes, but selling them in a location such as a corner store could make them more easily accessible to those who are more severely affected by a nicotine addiction, and could possibly act as a gateway for those that do not smoke, due to its friendly branding.

    2. The drink is less harmful than cigarettes and cigarettes are sold in any corner store, so why do you think that selling the drink is not a good idea when it can help people buy something less harmful than buying cigarettes?

    3. if Nicotine beverages have less harmful effect than cigarettes or alcohols, why would we ban them? Isn't it irony to provide people more harmful product? (it doesn't mean the beverage is healthy. My opinion is it's less harmful)

    4. This product contains less harmful substances than cigarette which means it can be helpful to quit smoking for some people. Also, the government would place limitations about this drink that you are concerned about like people who are more severely affected by a nicotine addiction.

      Delete
    5. I do not believe the drink should be "banned", but regulated and kept out of corner stores. I also don't think a nicotine drink is much better than cigarettes, as the main problem is the addicting effect of nicotine, which still remains in the drink. By selling these drinks at double the nicotine content of a single ciggerete, we are only perpetuating a smokers addiction and aren't doing anyone a favour. I'm not saying that the lack of smoke inhalation and health benefits isn't a plus, but the company is clearly not trying to help smokers quit if their putting twice as much nicotine content as two cigarettes in a single beverage, their only perpetuating their addiction.

  7. More and more places are prohibited from smoking, so more and more people started to find other alternatives toward common cigarettes. Some companies brought out some new kind of drink that contains nicotine, and whether the drink contains nicotine should be exist at all is a controversial topic. Although many people thinks that companies should stop selling nicotine drinks, I still hold the point of view that people should have the rights to decide what to drink and what not to.

First of all, the most commonly known issue of this kind of nicotine drink is that underage teenagers can buy them and drink them without any notice. What causing this is the unawareness of the re-sellers. More and more teenagers just look alike all adults nowadays, so many re-sellers just think that they are all adults. But what if the government create a law, that buying all nicotine-related products must have their ID with photo and birth date ready to inspect, and prohibit underage teenagers from nicotine drinks and other products, that is a really good way, actually.

Second, the issue of smoking normal cigarettes leads to two issues, one of them is that people does not want to smoke can still get smoke inside their lungs, known as the second hand smoke or second hand cigarette. With this new kind of nicotine drink, people do not need to worry about it anymore. Because people cannot get second hand smoke anymore.Second issue is the vulnerability of causing a fire hazard. With the nicotine drink, they do not need to worry about it too. Because that the nicotine drink do not even light up and have no smoke, no fire and no light.

Third, people who buys this drink should be aware what they are buying. Before, people have the right to buy cigarettes, so now, people should have the right to buy nicotine drinks too. These drinks should be write to be adults only, and adults are aware about what they are buying. Think about it, no one can take any actions toward you if you do not even take any actions yourselves. If you want to quit smoking, do not buy it, buy it if you are aware about what you are getting and what you are buying it for. People have the right and the ability to know what they are getting from the re-sellers.

For conclusion, as a substitution for normal cigarettes, the nicotine drink is actually a good way, even though it still leads to a lot of issues. But trust me, bad things always have a good side.

    1. So your point is nicotine drink is a bad thing but has a good side? Everything has two sides and a bad thing is something that has a stronger bad side. I may work well if people buying all nicotine-related products must have their ID with photo and birth date. However, now the most important problem is most re-sellers do not treat this kind of drink as careful as the cigarettes. If there is no specific law for something like nicotine drink, it should not be allowed to sell anymore.

  8. One thing that we all should realize is that we shouldn't be demonizing Nic Lite, when our main concern should be about cigarettes. Unlike Nic Lite, using cigarettes means inhaling burnt material that can cause different cancers, damage organs, can harm other people through second hand smoking, and can cause unwanted property damage from lit materials that can cause a fire. On the other hand Nic Lite is just a drink with a fraction of a classified drug. Concluding to me that Nic Lite is a safer alternative for nicotine that benefits both the user, and the people around them.

There is a set age that the government has created that prohibits teens fro abusing nicotine. But I can see that people are worried that kids might buy the drink as a gateway to abusing nicotine and creating an addiction. If a careless store sells Nic Lite to a kid, than they would sell cigarettes to the same kid as well. Nic Lite isn't a gateway to nicotine abuse, but careless stores are. If stores were more harsh on age regulations, and if teens didn't make poor choices in the first place than this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not condoning the use of an unhealthy, addictive drug, but to me I see nothing but benefits to selling this item, rather than any sever problems. I also find the potential problem of teens abusing Nic Lite and starting an addiction almost non-existent. To me Nic Lite is just another government regulated smoking alternative/ aid.

    1. I agree with your opinion. I also think cigarette is more harmful because it also negatively affects to other people. Also, i agree with your opinion that store should be more harsh on age restrictions for making sure teenagers don't abuse.

  9. Nicotine beverages have bot of positives and negatives. Compare to cigarettes Nicotine beverages have less negatives. First, It just provides Nicotine itself while Cigarettes require people to burn carcinogens such as tar. Second, when Cigarettes are burned, it also affects people beside smoker. If there is less negatives than product already in market, why would government ban it?

When teenagers use, it isn’t problem of Nicotine beverages itself. It’s problem of people who sell and who buy. If necessary, government can make restriction like they do for drinks and cigarettes. Also, I believe the beverage can make people have less cigarettes and drugs like weed which are much more harmful.

    2. I agree, what we need is more nicotine alternatives to make cigarettes and blunts obsolete, as the nicotine alternatives provide less health risks.

Banning nic drinks won't help underage teens from abusing it, but letting teens know the risks and providing the necessary support nic addicted teens to quit is a better solution getting rid of a healthier alternative to nicotine.

    3. I agree that this is a better alternative than smoking because of all of the other issues cigarettes cause. Even though it is not healthy, it is less harmful that things that are being sold these days therefore it should be sold in stores, with the proper restrictions.

    4. I agree that it is a healthier solution to smoking, however since it a liquid that look identical to water, many teens would definitely abuse it even if they knew the health risks. For example, teens smoke cigarettes a lot without being caught, but if they get their hands on some Nic Lite then it would be nearly impossible to catch them and make them learn from their mistakes.

  10. I think this should be legal because this product only affects people who want to drink this. It means that it should be marked on the label how much nicotine in it, so people can take this product that they are aware of potential consequences when they drink this. Also, this product is healthier for everyone. It contains less harmful substances than actual cigarette. It will reduce the health risks that smokers might have in the future like lung cancer. Additionally, this products only affects people who drink this. We all know that if someone smoke in the street, it is obvious that there is secondhand smoke. This product only harm themselves who decided to drink this because there is no secondhand smoke.

But there should be certain limitations for this product. And as I mentioned previously, it should be marked clearly on the label that this product contains nicotine in it. So, people don’t get confused with normal drinks.

Ethical question- Would this affect non smokers more than previous or current smokers?

    1. I agree with you that the drink should come with a nicotine warning, however what happens if a small child gets their hands on one of their parents drinks? it is much easier for a child to drink something that for them to take out a cigarette, light it, and then smoke it.

  11. What does this product eliminate? Does it help those smokers when smoking is prohibited? How is it dietary substance since it brings harm?

It should be legalized because it’s acceptable like cigarettes. It also means a limit is supposed to be set just like cigarettes and alcohol drinks. It brings harm and addiction to the teens therefore a limit is necessary. To make it completely legalized the company should also let the process of making the product under supervised. It guaranteed the quality of the products. Before it goes to the market, we have to ensure there isn’t anything else mixed in the drink.

This also brings out an interesting question: Who will be their potential consumers? As I know a drink can’t be a replacement of cigarettes in most smokers’ mind. For example, if a smoker smokes 20 cigarettes a day, would you think he will have 10 bottles of lemon-flavored nicotine drink instead? It has been a habit for most of the smokers and they enjoyed the way they smoke. The product doesn’t have a big target market because it isn’t alternative. . The smokers can only find themselves addicted to cigarettes but not nicotine. From the article, we know it only offers convenience to those who can’t smoke when they were working, like pilots, doctors, teachers and so on.

When the consumers can buy the drinks, the hazards of the product should also be labelled due to its harm to the underage teens. After the product has been legalized and accepted by the consumers, it can find its position in the market.

  12. There are multiple ethical questions that this product raises for me after reading it. Would the age limit for buying the drink be the same for buying cigarettes? Would the drinks be sold behind the counter with the cigarettes or in the normal drink coolers in the stores? And, what would the price be for each of the bottles?

There are both pros and cons with selling this drink in a corner store but I think it should be legal to sell, with some restrictions. It should have a drinking age, the same as for buying cigarettes (19 with ID, 25 without in Ontario). Also make the drinks at a higher price so people won’t want to spend a lot of money on the drinks unless they really needed to and if the consumers were still buying it as much as other drinks raise the price higher. Some of the good things that would come from this drink being sold is that smokers could drink this instead of smoking and then there would be less second hand smoking in other people. The cons to selling this is that it would be easier for under age teenagers to sneek this around (they could poor it into a normal bottle and say that its water). Also it would still have the bad effects of nicotine in the body because it is still a drug.

I hope that you guys are aware that selling the product at a higher price won't stop teens from buying it. If teens can buy anything that should only be sold to adults, you need to know to blame the establishment that irresponsibly sold nicotine to a minor, not the product that has blatently made it obvious that the drink should only be bought by adults, and have health benefits that are so obvious to the point where research is not required.

  13. The ethical questions it raises are should it be legal to sell like a normal drink or not.
I think It should be sold like normal cigarettes. It’s more like a cigarette drink, it contains nicotine that is only for adults. It’s not a normal kind of drink, it should not be sell to underage teenagers. It causes harms to teenagers. Not only nicotine physically harms teenagers but also harms teenagers mentally. When teenagers have tried some of this kind of drink, they will try to get some cigarettes because of curious or maybe the nicotine drink can’t satisfy them anymore.
However, I think it should still be legal to sell this drink in a corner store. Since the cigarettes are legal to sell in the corner store, the nicotine drink should also be. However, it should also be placed with cigarettes. It can only be sold to adults.

  15. Should it be legal to sell this drink in a corner store?

Lemon-flavoured drink laced with nicotine should be illegal to sell in a corner store, because nicotine is also a type of drug and if it causes harm to us. If they are selling it in a corner store anyone can go and buy the drink and get addicted to it or even start smoking and taking drugs. Nicotine is just as addictive as heroin and cocaine. The tobacco in nicotine products is harmful and can cause cancer and death. So, selling that in a corner store where it is not guaranteed to be selling what it says and the people working at the stores could have mixed something else in it to make it more harmful and addictive. Qum and the patch are used to help you quit smoking, but this Lemon-flavoured drink laced with nicotine will make people more addictive because it is just like a drug. There are many other ways to help you quit smoking that is way less harmful than taking drinks with nicotine. Corner stores are making a lot of money because there are many people out there that want to quit smoking so they are buying this drink without realizing that 8 ounces of this drink is equal to 2 cigarettes. So, the corner store is making a lot of money by selling this Lemon-flavoured drink laced with nicotine.

      2. Tar is an ingredient different from nicotine that is a carcinogen, but nicotine isn't
      3. You're saying you point about the drink being a beginning to nicotine addiction, as if the drink is such an easily accessible drink that anyone can just decide to get addicted to nicotine and buy it
4.Nic Lite never claimed to be a healthy drink, but it's certaintly a healthy alternative compared to cigarettes. Your saying this like your favourite brand of healthy vegetable smoothie put heroin in it and claims to be "healthy".
5.The gum and patch are also a product that contains the drug nicotine itself.
      6. This drink is an alternative to cigarettes, used for people who want to smoke but can't or decide not to. It's not an NRT product
7.How is drinking small amounts of nicotine less harmful than any other NRT product? Nicotine is absorbed through the bloodstream, and drinking it is no different from anything else
8.Why would a corner store suddenly make more money than usual by selling this drink. I think it's because you assume that half the teenage population suddenly decides to get addicted to nicotine and buy the drink, which probably didn't happen when the drink was first introduced

  17. Will the amount of nicotine entering the drink be regulated, as well as anything else being added into the drink? Can the drink be harmful for us?

In my opinion the drink should be allowed to be sold in your ordinary corner shop because cigarettes and other cigarette replacements are sold in corner shops. We all know that cigarettes are bad for you but they are still sold in every corner shop. Also nicotine helps people get relaxed or less stressed when ever they are feeling anxious.

With all that said I would also say that there would have to be a drinking age, like cigarettes, because these can be extremely harmful for a young persons life.

So if the amount of nicotine is regulated as well as other things going into the drink and the drinking age, then I don't see why it couldn't be sold in corner shops.

  18. This product raises questions like should this drink be available to anyone or are there restrictions we need to put on it? Would these nicotine lemon flavoured drinks be in any way more harmful than cigarettes? Should this drink be sold where there is supervision for example LCBO for liqueur, or the beer store for beer. Should the classification of this drink be changed from a dietary drink to a medically prescribed drink?

This business was smart to create a product like this, because they saw a want that this group of people had (to smoke in no smoking areas) and they created a good out of it (a drink with nicotine in it).

As it says in the article “The company is marketing this drink to smokers who find themselves in places where smoking is prohibited.” Yes it should be legal to sell these drinks at corner stores, because it is not much different from selling cigarettes, and this product is possibly better than cigarettes because there is no secondhand smoking effects. Of course because these drinks have nicotine in them, they should be sold with the same restrictions as cigarettes. For example if they were to sell these drinks here in Ontario, you would have to show proof of ID before getting the drink.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The ethical questions being proposed are: Should this drink be sold in corner stores? Should the drinks be sold without ID? Are the drinks safe for any age to drink? Should this drink be prescribed medically instead of for someone's dietary needs?

I believe that this drink should not be sold in corner stores for many reasons. First of all, the drink should not be available for children to casually buy; there should be an age restriction (possibly the same age restriction as cigarettes). Secondly, I think that the drinks being sold within the airport is better than allowing them to be sold at a corner store. Within the airport, children are generally supervised by a parent or guardian, which allows them to monitor what they buy. Also, I find it fair that the passengers who smoke have an alternate option; this would allow relief from the stress of not smoking while embarking on a long flight.

In my opinion, these drinks should have to be sold to those of legal age. If buyers look younger than the age restriction, they should have to provide their ID.

After gathering information about NIC Lite, I learned in a health point of view that this product is equivalent to smoking two cigarettes. However, the drink eliminates the requirement to smoke, which means that the drink does not effect the liver as much. After considering this, the drink is still harmful to the rest of the digestive system.

Regarding the above points, I believe NIC Lite should be distributed as a medically prescribed drink and no longer a dietary drink. Overall, this product should not be sold in corner stores or to those underage.

  21. One ethical question that this product raises is should it be classified as a dietary substance or as a drug in order to warn the customers its ingredients and danger before purchasing. Another being should it be restrained to minors the way cigarettes do.

I think it should be legal to sell this drink in a corner store but with certain restrictions. It is disturbing for smokers whose addictions occurs when they are in smoke free areas. This nicotine drink is their solution along with the gum and the patch. It also creates a better environment for people who are constantly bothered by second-hand smokes. It is a great business opportunity with a bright future and stands up against the long ruling tobacco industry as mentioned in the news article that the company sold 8 bottles in the first 30 minutes at LAX.

  22. There are many ethical questions raised by Nic Lite, on of them being "How will Nic Lite prevent children and teenagers from drinking the liquid?"

Nic Lite is a clear liquid that looks similar to water, so what will stop kids from sneaking it into their water bottles? In my opinion, this drink should be sold to people age 19 years or older, the same legal age to buy cigarettes. I think that this drink should be a colour that is unique compared to other drinks so that underage people cannot drink it without being caught.

    1. I agree that Nic Lite should be sold to people age 19 or older. Also, you raise a good point that the colour should change so that it is easier to be recognized. I originally did not think about the colour until you mentioned it.
